Select a Location
You probably already have a room or location in mind, however, there are some qualities you want to make sure the location has. First, you will need a large, solid table to place the machine on. Muse’s dimensions are 32” x 20” x 8.75” and weighs 70 lbs on its own, so a flimsy card table won’t be sturdy enough. You also want to be sure the room is large enough to accommodate not only the table and machine, but also the cooling system, the exhaust system and the air assist system. A table with shelf underneath for these systems is ideal. You will also need enough space to work in. This includes a place for your laptop or computer, raw materials, and some elbow room.
Safety Inspection
Once you have selected the space you will place your Muse, you will want to consider safety protocol. Before your Muse arrives be sure you have a properly inspected fire extinguisher. You will also want to have a first aid kit in, or near, your workspace. Finally, have an emergency plan ready in case of fire or other hazard. These are crucial elements for a safe workspace and should be prepared well in advance of your machine’s arrival.
Power Requirements
Your Muse is configured to work with standard power for your region. Remember that besides the laser cutter itself, you will need additional power outlets (and space) for the exhaust system, the laser tube cooling system, the air assist system and your computer. Be sure you have adequate power outlets and extention cords if needed.
Exhaust Requirements
Fumes and particles created from laser cutting different materials will need to be exhausted away from the workspace. This is typically done through a simple ventilation system that exits the fumes out a window or an installed exhaust duct (like a common clothes dryer). Your muse comes with 10 feet of exhaust ducting in a single piece. You will need measure your space to determine if this will be long enough. If it is, you can cut the ducting to create two pieces (you will need heavy wire cutters). If more than 10 feet of ducting is required, you will need to purchase the additional ducting yourself. If your workspace does not have a window or an installed exhaust port, you can purchase a fume extractor. Fume extractors use a filter system and do not require outside ventilation. If you intend on using a fume extractor, you will want to order it with (or prior) to your purchase of the hobby laser so it is ready to go.
Muse Arrival
When your Muse arrives, we suggest having an able bodied friend help you lift the box to your workspace and to lift the machine to your table. Once in your workspace, you will have to assemble the cooling and exhaust systems. Some required items are not included with your machine. For the cooling system you will need up to 3 gallons of distilled water. If you are using the water pump system, you will also need a 5 gallon bucket. We recommend you purchase a bucket with a lid to keep the water from being contaminated. You will also need a small pair of scissors to cut zip ties holding the focus head during shipping. Muse comes with 10 feet of exhaust ducting, so if you need more, have that ready, as well. You may want to stock up on some materials, as well, so you have something to work on. Finally, you can download the user manual prior to arrival to fully understand all aspects of your laser cutter.
When your Muser arrives, the best way to get cutting right away is to be prepared and have your workspace safe and ready for action.
